11 Jun 2015 TN Great Smoky Mountains National Park Cosby Campground

Lovely campground, mostly tent campers. Max RV length 25′. Huzzah. Heavy rain in the afternoon cooled it to wonderful 70s for excellent sleeping.

10 Jun 2015 AL Gadsden River Country Campground

I checked the weather in Gadsden driving off the interstate after a 20-minute delay on I-59 for road work – cloudy o rain for three days. Then I noticed the rainbow, which seemed out of place for the situation. Then it started to rain a bit. And by the time we got to the campground, it was heavy. We donned rain coats and ran into the office to register. Just as we got there, the lights went out. And the hail started. How to get into the gated park with no electricity? Umbrellas flying, plants knocked over, trees uprooted – a real doozy.

We went to dinner at Top O’ the River – catfish! – to wait out the storm. Then back to River Country for a riverside site. Very pretty and quiet even though close to I-59.

A quiet night awakened by birds other than Tico. And, of course, Tico. I checked on my current options trade (QQQ iron condor) and made a reservation at Crosby campground in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. John checked his mail and answered an rv yahoo group question about battery meters. Eventually we got it together to head out and get lunch at the Courtyard Cafe (meat and four) in quaint downtown Gadsden & next to  dinosaur and art museums! It looked like everyone in town was there. Fried green tomatoes!

05 – 07 June 2015 Breaux Bridge LA Pioneer RV Park

this is the heart of Cajun country. On Friday, we ate at Pont Breaux restaurant. The food was OK but the music – Lee Benoit – and dancing was great!

04 Jun 2015 Desoto TX

We stayed at the home of our friend and my Antioch classmate Penny. She came here from Brookhaven to work on the magnets for the Superconducting Super Collider. She has six cats – some friendly, some not.

03 Jun 2015 Mesalands Dinosaur Museum, Tucumcari NM

We had to stop in Tucumcari – what a name! I just finished reading The dinosaur feather so the dinosaur museum was a natural especially for John, reader of the science Times.

13 – 16 Nov RV outing to Yanks in Greenfield CA

On Thursday Nov 13 we piled Suzette (the cat), Molly (the dog), Tico (the parrot) and us into Nellie the Navion and drove about 2 hours south to Greenfield CA for a planned outing with the Lone Cyprus Winnitascins RV club at Yanks RV park, located next to us 101.

The RV park is a newly created, beautifully designed and impeccably groomed, although somewhat spartan looking because the plentiful trees are still young.  The park sits among acres of flat farmland between the mountain ranges hemming in the Salinas Valley.  The Yanks RV park is the first stage of an ambitious plan to build a destination resort with an aviation museum as the centerpiece.

Thursday evening we joined the club for diner at the Windmill Restaurant in near-by Soledad. The restaurant was near empty except for the the LCW group of about 40, but everyone agreed that the food was delicious and the service excellent.  Another night we grilled our own choice of meat & enjoyed a pot-luck choice of dishes at the spacious Yanks club house.

On Friday afternoon we drove Nellie to near-by Pinnacles National Park (until recently a National Monument) via CA 146 to the western entrance.  We hiked along the Balconies Caves trail to the cave and look some pictures.  The unusual rock formations are the key ingredient to the park.  John climbed into and through the cave while Jessie waited outside.  The trail to the cave was easy, but the cave itself was not easy to get into or out of and definitely needed a flash light in the interior.  The “Talus” cave is formed by boulders & rock jammed atop a narrow canyon.  It is home to Townsend’s big-eared bats but none were seen.

Chateauneuf du Pape, Vacqueyras, and Gigondas. We visited a family winery in Chateauneuf du Pape and tasted Vacqueyras and Gigondas in wine shops.

Gigondas is made from grenache (maximum of 80%), syrah and mourvedre. Jessie discovered she prefers wines with more mourvedre (remembering Rosenblum’s Chateau La Paws Cote du Bone Roan). It was a great chance to taste a variety of Gigondas.
