Virtually everything in Iceland is volcanic! It’s striking that everywhere we’ve been ice or glacier capped mountains are visible, many of them (currently) dormant volcanoes. Yesterday, on yet another beautiful warm sunny day here, we visited Lake Myvatn where I scampered up a 2700 year old volcano with a perfect cone shape, we drove thru acres of lava flow, visited bubbling mud pots and ended up soaking at a “natural” hot pool. Almost every town is heated by geothermal water and Myvatn has a large geothermal power plant. In the absence of geothermal power, hydroelectric is the norm. (No solar power evident.) in one small town, they are considering piping geothermal water from across a fiord miles away to heat the houses.
Other than a cooler day recently, temps have been 10-14 deg C (about 60+) but most people are still wearing warm jackets. A breeze is always present, if not a stronger wind. On the prior cruise reportedly it was cold and rained everyday and it snowed in Akureyri so we’ve been very fortunate.
Today we go whale and puffin watching.
