04 July Ferry Crossing, Sequim, Washington Rainbow’s End RV Park

With Nellie the RV queued at the Victoria-Port Angele’s ferry (conveniently located within the busy but efficient Victoria Harbor), we had time to visit the Royal BC Museum in Victoria which has great First Nations exhibits.  We need to come back to see the rest of the museum some time.IMG_7136 IMG_7132IMG_7130

After a short ferry ride across the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and passing through US customs at Port Angeles WA, we arrived at the Rainbow’s End RV park in Sequim WA. The Olympic peninsula’s parks were crowded as expected on a Canadian & US holiday week. Jessie had made the reservations while on Vancouver Island on July 3, so we might otherwise been camping on the road-side somewhere in Washington.  It was pouring rain as we set up for the night, a surprise in Sequim (usually dry place in the Olympic Mtns “rain shadow”) but it cleared up and we could hear the ad hoc July 4th fireworks going off in the evening.

This is the first point of the trip where John’s travel plan was largely blank.  John/me had not been sure what would happen crossing to & from Vancouver Island.  We found the actual ferry passage time was about 7 hours given time to queue the RV early with a reserved ticket.  For the passage from Victoria to Port Angeles, we bought the ticket at the gate, no reservation needed.  Also, no one asked us to turn off the propane. And we had about 3 hours to visit the BC Museum.

The earlier BC ferry crossing from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo was different.  It required that we turn off the propane.  And when we tried to get a reservation on the ferry for the next day (June 29), we/Jessie had to settle for 3 days hence, on Jul 2.  Staying a couple of days in Vancouver while waiting was not a bad alternative.  But it did change the subsequent plans and reduced the time we could spend on the island.

Did I mention that we had SF Giants tickets for July 10?  Well, this has been a background goal since the start: be back home by July 8-9, or earlier.
